The day started out warm and continued to heat up. And that was just the dancing. Late August 2013 saw the first ever Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh Teaching Artist Training! And the end result was three, yes three new teaching artists!
In July 2013, Terry Sweeney went to New York, thanks to a grant from the Sylvia and Martin Snow Charitable Foundation Fund, to become certified as a National Network Senior Teaching Artist. After four years of hard work with Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh, Mr. Sweeney was invited to become certified. While that was going on, we were hard at work finding people to be trained.
Who are the new TA’s? Well, let’s meet them!
Miss Jen Hoffman is a certified personal trainer. She has received a BA in Sport Management with a minor in art and has her M.Ed in Physical Education. Jen is the owner and creator of LOCO Fitness — a small business that offers at home personal training, online personal training, small group and corporate training, as well as outdoor bootcamps. She is also currently employed through the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh at the US Steel tower and with FullBody Fitness Club in Brentwood.
Miss Jen completed her Teaching Artist training in August 2013 and lists Rumba as her favorite dance.
Mr. David Minniefield is excited for his first year as a Teaching Artist for Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh. He has been making a living as an Actor, Director, and Drama Teacher for the past decade. Working with organizations such as Saltworks, CLO, Gateway to the Arts, and directing the high school shows for Trinity Christian School since 2004, David’s passion is bringing out the best in young people.
Ms. Kathy Moran is a new Teaching Artist for Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh. She joined the team after she retired from her position as principal from one of the original Dancing Classrooms schools in Pittsburgh. Kathy had some dance experience in Modern and African dance from her early years in high school. Her love of the arts and her firsthand experience of seeing how students positively respond to ballroom dancing — students treating each other with respect, supporting teamwork and developing leadership skills — made her want to return to her love of teaching.
Ms. Kathy has a Master’s Degree in Administration and Policy Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She has a certification in elementary education and is a certified K-12 Principal.
We are so proud of our new Teaching Artist’s and even more excited to have them starting to teach!!!! Special shout out to Ms. Ashley for starting this so I could finish it!
